How to Prepare Your Child for Kindergarten

by | May 4, 2018 | Education & Training

Do you have a child who is about to go into kindergarten in the coming year? It’s an exciting time for the little one who wants to go to school and see what it’s all about, naturally. However, as a parent, you want to make sure that the child is properly prepared before they get to school, so that they can keep up with all the other children. Fortunately, there are many ways that you can help to get your child ready, so they are going to have as easy of a transition as possible to the school. Let’s look at some of the things you can do right now.

Preparation Tips

There are quite a few things that a child should know before going to school. It’s not essential that they know everything that follows, but the more they know, the easier it will be to adjust and to keep up. Parents should practice with them a bit each day to help them learn at least some of the letters of the alphabet, including the shapes of the letters and the sounds they make. They should know how to grip pencils and crayons, and how to use basic materials, such as paint, glue, and other art supplies. It’s also important that they can write their name with proper uppercase and lowercase letters. If they can’t quite get it, that’s okay.

The kids should be able to count to ten, understand shape, size, and quantity, and know how to follow directions. Cleaning up after themselves, managing their bathroom needs, and knowing their name, address, and phone number are also quite important.

Parents should spend time teaching their child to many of these things as possible. By making learning more like play, it can help to keep the little ones engaged while they are still learning. Start out with shorter learning sessions, and then gradually lengthen them.

Prepare With a Preschool

Of course, one of the best ways to prepare your child for kindergarten is to make sure they attend a quality preschool first. Preschool will provide them with a range of the skills mentioned above, and it can help to get them acclimated to being at school and socializing with their peers. When choosing a preschool in New Jersey to help your child prepare for going to elementary school, make sure that you choose a quality option, such as Alpine Montessori.
