Another example is the experimentation of platinum–nickel alloys in the automobile industry. These alloys have helped auto manufacturers find a way to reduce the release of CO2 emissions. Some fuel cells include platinum–nickel alloys in their designs. To power cars, these cells use hydrogen instead of conventional fuel and release only water as a byproduct. This mission is important because, as populations increase in developed countries, more people will drive cars and thus pollute the air.

Alloys are mixtures of metals that are found in products you use every day. From stair railings to automobiles, you will see alloys everywhere. Likewise, catalysts are needed to create the products that you value every day. The use of catalyst alloys is needed to create ammonia, hydrogen ions and carbonated water. In the body, catalysts are known as enzymes, some of which have a digestive function, breaking down food after eating.
